Experience that Counts Kai Mickey, President and founder of STSI, began his career in the sales tax field as an auditor for the State of California after graduating from California State University, Sacramento with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. While serving with the State of California, among other duties, Mr. Mickey served as an Senior Tax Auditor (Associate Tax Auditor) and was responsible for handling sales tax audits of all industries and all sizes including handling the larger more complex cases. He also served frequently as an interim audit crew supervisor, conducted many training courses for both audit staff and the public at large, and was responsible for the training of many new auditors. Mr. Mickey was then recruited from the Board of Equalization to serve as Vice President of a private sales tax consulting firm. Following his time in this position Mr. Mickey formed Sales Tax Specialists, Inc. in order to focus on providing superior results in a cost-effective manner. Sales Tax Specialists, Inc. is also proud to be designated as the only Preferred Provider of sales tax consulting services for the Society of California Accountants. And since we focus our attention on California Sales and Use Tax, our services will never interfere with your existing relationship with your clients and members. General Fee Information Our mission from the beginning has been to offer our clients exceptional service with superior results without making them incur the large expense that is so commonly associated with this type of service. Our goal is to provide big firm results without the big firm costs. We do this by maintaining a low overhead and by focusing our attention on providing our clients with effective and efficient results. We are proud of our services and the associated costs and, based on our history of satisfied clients, are equally confident that our future clients will be satisfied as well. In our hourly engagements our audit and compliance services are billed at very competitive rates. In many cases, such as when we are assisting with audits that have already been assessed or when we are seeking to secure refunds for our clients, we can work with our clients on a fixed fee basis or on a contingency basis, where our clients pay only when we secure a refund or reduction. In cases where it makes sense for our clients, we offer engagements involving a combination of types of agreements for different aspects of our engagement. And, unlike most firms of our type, we rarely require up-front fees or retainers (initial retainers are generally only required in cases where the Board of Equalization has asserted a penalty for evasion of tax) .
